2013 Kenya Slum Policy Studio: Scaling up from plans to national policies
The changing political climate in Kenya, including the passage of a new Constitution that declared rights to land, housing and a safe and healthy living environment for all Kenyans, presented our collaboration with a new opportunity. We designed a studio course in 2013 that partnered with Kenyan civil society organizations that were participating in the drafting of Kenya's National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Policy. The 2013 studio course was led by students and faculty from both UC Berkeley and University of Nairobi and included a detailed review of Kenya's historical treatment of slums and the urban poor, analyses of urban slum upgrading policies in other countries of the global south, and drafting of policy papers aimed at recommending an integrated and participatory slum upgrading policy.
